New York’s 16th congressional district is one of the most diverse in the nation. That is our strength. Yet too many of our friends, family and neighbors regularly face hatred and violence, fueled by a resurgent, racist right-wing.
In the past few years, since Trump was elected, attacks have become more frequent, and more deadly. In 2018, a white nationalist entered the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh and killed 11, wounded 6, in the deadliest antisemitic attack in American history. A white man in North Carolina killed 3 Muslim students in 2015, and hate crimes against Muslims are at an all-time high. New York City saw a spike in Anti-Asian hate across our city, with eldery Asian New Yorkers suffering violent assaults. And Black lives across America continue to be threatened on a daily basis.
Jamaal Bowman believes we are at our strongest when we build bridges and form alliances across lines of difference.
Jamaal has built coalitions across our diverse district to address the threat of antisemitism, Islamophobia, and white nationalism before it’s too late. That means ensuring anti-racist curriculum in our schools to create a flourishing multiracial, multiethnic, and multifaith democracy. It also means ensuring the Department of Justice takes seriously the growing threat of antisemitism, Islamophobia, hate crimes, and white supremacist extremism in this country.
Jewish institutions are too frequent targets of antisemitism and hate, so Jamaal ensured they have the protection they need to continue their community building work. When violence erupted in the Middle East, Jamaal took the House floor and put forth a resolution that declared the value of both Palestinian and Israeli lives, urged an immediate cease-fire and encouraged diplomatic efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
